3 Big Tips for Remote Workers Who Live in Philadelphia

Business

You’ve decided to take up residence in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love. Now a bustling city, this area was first settled by the Lenape who used the rich land to support their people.

Now it is your new home and you are probably going to need to prepare for a few things.  You’ll have to adjust to different environments, learn new spaces, but above all, you are going to have to find reliable workspaces!  You don’t want to stay cooped up all day do you?

1. Prepare for Snow

Philly regularly gets more than twenty inches of snow a year.  From house prep to car prep and more, there’s a lot that you have to be ready for.  Keep in mind that people are more often than not, still expected to go to work even if there is snow on the ground.

Cars

A big part of traveling in Philly is not really done by car as much as it is by walking or taking local transportation systems.  Even then you have to prepare your car.

Snow is made up of dirt and other minerals that are going to create rust no matter how good your paint job is.  On top of that, you have to ensure that the tires are approved for snow OR have snow chains.

House and Home

Many of the places to live in Philly are found in historical buildings and are usually within walking distance of anything you might need.  This is fortunate with the amount of snow and it usually means that you will have a landlord.

Most winterization will be covered by the landlord fortunately, but it is important to remember that you will still need to pay attention to any posted warnings or safety information provided.

Getting You Ready

The other thing about snow is that it can be unbearably cold!  This means that if you haven’t lived in a cold area recently, you will have to build up your stock of cold weather items.

If you plan to be out and about on a regular basis then you are going to need at least the following:

  • Long johns
  • Leggings
  • Thick socks
  • Padded waterproof boots
  • Sweaters
  • Thick jacket
  • Long sleeved shirts
  • Gloves
  • Hats

And that’s just to start!

2. Working Remote Doesn’t Mean Stay at Home

As remote and online work become more and more popular, there are more options than ever regarding what defines a workspace.  In many popular or highly populated areas, there are now Co-Work Spaces.

You also have the option to go to many of the local cafes where you can grab a cup of joe, or take a trip to local libraries that offer public computers and free wifi.

An added benefit of Philadelphia is that the transportation system actually works for the city.  Rather than it taking hours to get around town, the handily constructed block neighborhood system makes it easy to navigate for buses and citizens alike.

Co-Work Spaces

The easiest way to find a co-work space near you in Philadelphia is to search co-work spaces on any map app.  Not every location is created alike however so be sure to read reviews.

Keep in mind that most, if not all, designated co-work spaces require a rental fee.  The two places that are going to pop up the most are WeWork and The Yard.  Try them out soon!

Libraries of Mention

Of course a library is something that many people have either been to or heard of.  But this is the state of Pennsylvania we are talking about.  Here you are going to find historic libraries such as The Fisher Fine Arts Library and the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Top Cafes

Most places are going to offer some kind of internet support especially because of how business oriented downtown Philly is.   The top two locations to check out? Elixir and Green Line.

3. Take the Opportunity

It may go without saying, but the state of Pennsylvania and the City of Brotherly Love are chock full of museums, historical sites, plenty of parks and just as money hiking and biking areas.  With rich history also comes rich traditions, plenty of festivals and a ton of great times!

There’s Always Something Going On

Regardless of the season, Philly is constantly celebrating something or they continually have some sort of festival happening.  If music and festivals aren’t your thing, how about sports or art? It doesn’t matter what you are into, there is always an event going on.  If you want to check out what events are going on this week, take a look here!

There’s a Lot to See and Learn
